Chapter 1
Verse 1
Ἀρκὴ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου Ἱησοῦ Χριστοῦ υἱοῦ θεοῦ·
The Beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ Son of God.
Verse 2
Καθὼϛ γὲγραπται ἑν τῷ Ἠσαΐα τῷ προφήτῃ, Ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου, ὃϛ κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου·
In accordance with what is written in Isaiah the prophet, "See I am sending my messenger out ahead of you, to prepare the way for you. 1
Verse 3
φονὴ βοῶντοϛ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδόν κυρίου, εὐθείαϛ ποιεῖτε τὰϛ τρίβουϛ αὐτοῦ,
A voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, straight make the path for you.’" 2
Verse 4
ἐγένετο Ἰωάννηϛ ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ κηρύσσον βάπτισμα μετανοίαϛ είϛ ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν·
Came John the Baptizer in the wilderness and preaching a baptism with understanding into departure of sin.
Verse 5
καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸϛ αὐτὸν πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καὶ οἱ Ἱεροσολμῖται πάντες, καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπ᾿αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν·
And came out to him all the in the land of Judea and Jerusalem all, and he baptized them under in the Jordan river confessing their sins.
Verse 6
καὶ ἦν ὁ Ἰωάννης ἐνδεδυμένος τρίχας καμήλου καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐσθίων ἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον·
And was the John clothed hair camel and girded with skin around the loins of him and eating crickets 3 and honey field.
Verse 7
καὶ ἐκήρυσσεν λέγων, Ἔρχεται ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου ὀπίσω μου, οὗ ούκ εἰμὶ ἱκανός κύψας 4 λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάτα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ·
And was-preaching saying, Coming mightier-than me after me, he not me am-even stoop loose the leather-thongs(similar: shirt) the under-bindings of him.
Verse 8
ἐγὼ ἐβάπτισα ὑμᾶς ὕδατι, αὐτὸς βαπτίσει ὑμᾶς ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίω·
I baptize you in water, he baptize you in the spirit holy.
Verse 9
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἧμέραις ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲτ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην ὑπὸ Ἰοάννου·
And it happened in anew those days came Jesus out-of Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized into the Jordan under John.
Verse 10
καὶ εὐθὺς ἀναβαίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος εἶδεν σχιζομένους τοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα ὡς περιστερὰν 5 καταβαῖνον εἰς αὐτον·
And immediately coming up out of the water saw opened the heavens and the spirit like bird coming down into him.
Verse 11
καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν, Σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν σοὶ εὐδόκησα·
And voice was made out the heavens, You are son of Me I love, in You I accept.
Verse 12
Καὶ εὐθὺς τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτὸν ἐκβάλλει εἰς τὴν ἔρημον·
And immediately the spirit him cast into the wilderness.
Verse 13
καὶ ἦν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τεσσεράκοντα ἡμέρας πειραζόμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ Σατανᾶ, καὶ ἦν μετὰ τῶν θηρίων, καὶ οἱ ἄγγελοι διηκόνουν αὐτῷ·
And was in the wilderness 40 days time of testing upon the Satan, and was with the things of the field, and the angels waited on Him.

καὶ παραγων 6 παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἷδεν Σίμωνα καὶ Ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν Σίμωνος ἀμφιβάλλοντας ἐν τῇ θαλάσση· ἦσαν γὰρ ἁλιεῖσ·
And beside-going beside the sea of the Galilee he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon all-sides-casting in the sea. They were truly fishermen.
Verse 17
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου, καὶ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς γενέσθαι ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων·
And he said to them the Jesus, come-after follow me, and I will make you to become fishermen of people.
Verse 18
καὶ εὐθὺς ἀφέντες τὰ δίκτυα ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ·
And immediately leaving the nets they followed him.
Verse 19
Καὶ προβὰς ὀλίγον εἶδεν Ἰακοβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα,
And probing on a little he saw James the-one the-of Zebedee and John the brother of him and they were in the boat repairing the nets
Verse 20
καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκάλεσεν αὐτούς. καὶ ἀφέντες τὸν πατέρα αὐτῶν Ζεβεδαῖον ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ μετὰ τῶν μισθωτῶν ἀπῆλθον ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ·
And immediately he called them. And leaving the father of them Zebedee in the boat with the hired men they came out and were followers of him.
Verse 21
Καὶ εἰσπορεύονται εἰς Καφαρναουμ· καὶ εὐθὺς τοῖς σάββασιν εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν ἐδίδασκεν.
And having into-gone into Capernaum. And immediately the sabbath into-went into the gathering he taught.
Verse 22
καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ· ἦν γὰρ διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ὡς ἐξουσίαν ἔχων καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς·
And they were dumbfounded upon the teaching of him. Was truly of him as authority having and no as the teachers.
Verse 23
καὶ εὐθὺς ἦν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ καὶ ἀνέκραξεν
And immediately in was in the gathering of them a man with a spirit without-cleanness and was crazed
Verse 24
λέγων, Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ; ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς; οἶδά σε τίς εἶ, ὁ ἅγιος τοῦ θεοῦ·
saying, what we and you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to kill (unmake) us? I know you what are, the holy one of God.
Verse 25
καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων, φιμώθητι καὶ ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ.
and gazing upon him Jesus said be quiet and come out of him.
This is actually a mashup quotation from two of the prophets in the Septuagint. The Byzantine Textform uses the more accurate, “…written in the prophets…”.↩
The NA/UBS textual theory includes the idea, that the original autograph is rougher, as the questionable elements in the text show. The Byzantine Textform is cleaner, and easier to read.↩
Uncertain. Crickets is actually ἀκρίς. Literally: Without…barley(?) | borders/edge(?) | top(of hill)/knob(?)↩

περι, is a preposition meaning around. No definitions for στεραν found. Possibly related to στερεομα (stereoma, Firmament; meaning a three-dimensional volume). If true, περιστεραν (peri-steran) could mean: around space; i.e. a creature of the firmament/a creature of a 3 dimensional volume. In other words, it’s a generic term for flying creature, or bird.↩
